Bassas da India
Atoll off the Southwest Coast of Africa
Bassas de India is an atoll consisting
of a volcanic island surrounded by reefs
that is completely covered by water
at high tide. It has been a possession
of France since 1897. In 1968 Basses
da India has been administered by a
commissioner located on the island of
Reunion. Bassas da India is located
in the Southern Mozambique Channel,
about half way between Mozambique and
the island of Madagascar.
